XE on BA.1 ja BA.2 sars-2 viruksen omikronvarianttilinjojen rekombinaatiovirus

XE -rekombinantista alkaa tulla kliinistä tietoa Englannista päin. 6.4. 2022.

The list of COVID-19 symptoms has gotten bigger after experts added nine more entries to it this week.  On Monday (4.4. 2022), the U.K. National Health Service (NHS) updated its list of COVID-19 symptoms to include nine more signs that could help people tell if they have contracted the novel coronavirus.

COVID-19 Symptoms List

The original signs of a COVID-19 infection recognized by experts in the U.K. were

  1. fever,

  2. continuous cough, and

  3. loss of smell or

  4. loss of taste,

even though the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) came up with a much longer list in the early days of the pandemic.

The updated symptoms list now includes

  1. shortness of breath,

  2. feeling tired or exhausted,

  3. body ache,

  4. headache,

  5. sore throat,

  6. blocked or runny nose,

  7. loss of appetite,

  8. diarrhea, and

  9. feeling sick or being sick.

The public health service indicated that the newly included symptoms could be mistaken for other conditions since they are very similar to cold and flu symptoms.

Previously, people in the U.K. only became eligible for a PCR test if they manifested one of the three original symptoms, as per The Guardian. With the expanded list, more people would qualify for PCR testing if they have the symptoms.

COVID Cases In The U.K.

England offered free testing for all until last week. The U.K. then hit a record level of transmissions, with 4.9 million people testing positive for the novel coronavirus, according to the BBC

The NHS said people should follow precautionary measures if they start developing COVID-19 symptoms. They should stay at home and avoid others if their symptoms have gotten so bad that they are unable to work.

Tim Spector, a professor at King’s College London and lead scientist of the Zoe COVID-19 symptom tracker app, praised the decision to finally update the symptoms list after two years.

“NHS official Main symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19) have finally changed after 2 years of lobbying and Zoe app user input - hurrah! Pity they have the order wrong - but it’s a start and could help reduce infections,” Spector wrote on Twitter

The news comes amid the discovery of the new SARS-CoV-2 variant in the U.K., dubbed XE. It is said to be a “recombinant” of the omicron variant and the BA.2 strain.

Based on the latest figures, XE represents less than 1% of all COVID-19 cases in the country. But it is still unknown if the newer strain is more contagious than stealth omicron

Dubbed XE ( rekombinaatio XE)

new COVID-19 variant has been discovered in the United Kingdom, as the country’s Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has begun analyzing it.

The agency said that as of March 22, 637 cases of the new strain, dubbed XE, have been found in England. It is described as a "recombinant" of the Omicron variant, and its relative BA.2, with “the majority of the genome including the S gene belonging to BA.2.”

XE represents less than 1% of all cases in the U.K., however, and experts are still unclear on how contagious it is. UKHSA chief medical advisor transition lead Professor Susan Hopkins says that recombinant variants are frequent and typically wane after a period of time.

“So far there is not enough evidence to draw conclusions about transmissibility, severity or vaccine effectiveness,” Hopkins said, as reported by The Independent

COVID cases have reached a record high in England, as nearly 8% of people had the virus in the week ending March 26, based on an estimation from the Office for National Statistics. That’s around one in every 13 people, as data also show that the number of infections throughout the U.K. increased by over 600,000 compared to the week prior. Officials in the country have also announced that free universal testing has come to an end.

A new sub-variant of Omicron has been found in UK as the country battles a renewed surge of the coronavirus.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said that 4.9 million people in the UK were infected with Covid-19 as of last weekend - a record high during the pandemic.

The surge is cases is thought to be down to people mixing more freely since Covid restrictions were dropped and the Omicron BA.2 sub-variant, known as Stealth Omicron.

But now a further mutation has been detected that could be more transmissible, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has warned.

What do we know so far?

XE is a mutation of the Omicron BA.1 and BA.2 strains - which is referred to as a “recombinant”.

In a report released last week the WHO said the XE recombinant was first detected in the UK on January 19 and said early tests showed it could be more transmissible.

The report said: “Early-day estimates indicate a community growth rate advantage of 10% as compared to BA.2, however this finding requires further confirmation.

“XE belongs to the Omicron variant until significant differences in transmission and disease characteristics, including severity, may be reported.”

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSCA) said on Monday that the most recent data showed XE had a growth rate 9.8 per cent above BA.2.

However it cautioned that “as this estimate has not remained consistent as new data have been added, it cannot yet be interpreted as an estimate of growth advantage for the recombinant.”

“Numbers were too small for the XE recombinant to be analysed by region,” the UKHSCA said.
