IRAQ - Outbreaks of a H5 strain of highly pathogenic avian influenza virus spread on farms in central Iraq in June and July.
Eleven outbreaks were reported in total, mainly affecting Baghdad but also the nearby Wasit region.
In total, 2.8 million birds died or were destroyed in the outbreaks. The source of the outbreaks is unknown.
As well as stamping out and disinfection, the country is using
movement controls and surveillance measures to prevent further spread.
Sodan, nälänhädän, kuivuuden, pakolaisvirtojen lisäksi siipikarjan suurimitainen kuolema on paha isku väestölle. Saati sitten se vaara, että uusi pandemiavirus lähtee vähitellen ihmiskunnan puolelle tuosta kurjuuden myräkästä.
